The Circular Rainbow project, a two-year initiative funded under the Interreg Italy-Slovenia program, will be one of the key participants at AQUAFARM 2025, the prestigious international trade fair dedicated to aquaculture, shellfish farming, and the sustainable fishing industry, taking place in Pordenone (Italy) on February 12-13, 2025.

Circular Rainbow will participate in the event alongside the Interreg Italy-Croatia projects Marinet and Brigantine, also coordinated by the University of Udine, sharing a joint exhibition and demonstration space. This collaboration represents an important opportunity to strengthen scientific cooperation between Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia and to promote innovative solutions for sustainable aquaculture. Additionally, the joint participation with the Interreg Italy-Slovenia project BeBlue - Beyond Bluegrass: Strengthening the Sustainable Agri-Food Sector through Aquaponics, coordinated by Ca' Foscari University of Venice, that will provide a unique opportunity for exchange and further co-development among project partners, further consolidating the research and development network in the field of sustainable aquaculture.

Circular Rainbow Events at AQUAFARM 2025

 In addition to its presence at the exhibition stand, where project activities, a 3D model of the RAS system, promotional materials, and company surveys will be presented, the Circular Rainbow project will be at the center of two key presentations during the trade fair:

 • On Thursday, February 13, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, in the MASAF hall, as part of a conference dedicated to the circular economy in aquaculture, Prof. Gloriana Cardinaletti will highlight the importance of transitioning to Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) and their digitalization, presenting the new pilot RAS system recently inaugurated at Sarvadei in Pagnacco.

 • On Wednesday, February 12, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM, in the MASAF hall, Prof. Alessandro Chiumenti will speak at the event "Aquaculture for the Planet: Decarbonization, Self-Consumption of Energy, and Resilience," explaining how the results of the previous AdriAquanet project will be integrated into Circular Rainbow for biogas production from aquaculture wastewater.

A Model for Circular and Sustainable Trout Farming

The Circular Rainbow project brings together four partners: the University of Udine, the Faculty of Biotechnology at the University of Ljubljana, the company Bluefarm srl, and the Chamber of Agriculture and Forestry of Slovenia – Agricultural Institute Kranj. The main goal is to develop innovative circular trout farming models that optimize production, reduce environmental impact, and increase resilience to climate change. Key solutions of the project include:

The introduction of Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) for more efficient water resource use;

Digitalization and advanced monitoring to improve system management

Integration of the circular economy to reuse aquaculture by-products, including biogas production from fish farming wastewater.

An Alliance for the Future of Aquaculture

Circular Rainbow’s participation at AQUAFARM 2025, together with the BeBlue, Marinet, and Brigantine projects, underscores the importance of cross-border collaboration in addressing sustainability challenges in aquaculture. Through an innovative and interdisciplinary approach, the project will contribute to the dissemination of best practices in the circular economy, the provision of concrete tools for sustainable fish farm management, and the strengthening of links between research, businesses, and the local environment.
