HeatIslands Adapt
Specific objective: SO 4 - Promoting climate change adaptation and disaster risk prevention, resilience, taking into account eco-system based approaches
Typology: Standard project
The HeatIslands Adapt project addresses the challenge of Urban Heat Islands (UHIs) and heat stress caused by high temperatures. These phenomena are particularly pronounced in urban areas, such as Gorizia and Nova Gorica, where urbanization, lack of vegetation, and energy-inefficient buildings result in extreme temperature conditions. The project aims to mitigate the impact of UHIs, enhance urban resilience to heat extremes, and improve the quality of life for residents, particularly vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and individuals with chronic illnesses.
- reduce the impacts of Urban Heat Islands and adapt urban areas to climate change to enhance urban resilience and improve residents' quality of life;
- prepare a cross-border action plan for the implementation of preventive and remedial measures in non-urban areas threatened or already affected by erosion.
The expected results include establishing a heatwave prediction system based on harmonized meteorological and climate data and upgrading GIS systems with vulnerable area locations will enable targeted planning of adaptation measures, reducing UHI impacts and strengthening urban resilience. The project will also foster knowledge exchange and best practices among six partner organizations and enhance municipal strategic planning by integrating sustainable adaptation measures.
