In January, the Regional Development Centre Koper, one of the partners in the Inter Bike III project of the Interreg VI-A Italy-Slovenia programme, organised a meeting on mobility with representatives of municipalities from the Coastal-Karst region.
The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss with the municipalities the preparation of a study on the optimisation of public bus transport, which is foreseen within the project.
At the meeting, the municipalities pointed out that the main challenges are the lack of frequent bus services and the shortage of suburban bus routes on some areas, while cross-border bus routes with neighbouring Croatia and Italy are also weak. This theme also coincides with some of the activities of the Adrioncycletour project of the Interreg VI-A Italy-Slovenia programme, which concerns the setting up of cross-border working groups on tourism and sustainable mobility and the preparation of recommendations on these topics for local, regional or national authorities.
The study to be produced under the project will include a situation analysis and recommendations and proposals for improving suburban and cross-border public bus transport routes, as well as for introducing a bicycle rack programme on some bus routes (Bike & Ride). The study will serve as a basis for discussions with the relevant ministry on improving the frequency of bus services and on the establishment of additional much-needed bus routes.
