We invite you to the inventory of the European tree frog (Hyla arborea) in the Slovenian area of Istria, Birchinia and Karst, on Saturday, May 17, 2025 with the starting point at the Škocjan Cave Park, Slovenia.
The European tree frog (Hyla arborea) is between 3 and 5 cm in size and it is an extremely cute amphibian. In addition to its appearance, it is particularly striking due to its climbing abilities, which are made possible by the round discs on the tips of the fingers. It skillfully climbs leaves and branches of trees and shrubs, reeds and other plants of similar size. It is mostly active during the day, but its presence is easier detected after sunset during the mating season (late spring and early summer), when adult males are especially intensively croaking. On a quiet evening, the tuned calls of a group of males can easily be heard several kilometers away. European tree frog is threatened by the rapid disappearance of suitable habitats due to urbanization and drying. All types of pollution that can lead to changes in water quality are also a serious problem. The introduction of fish into aquatic habitats, where they reproduce, is also a threat.
In cooperation between Škocjan caves Park, University of Primorska, Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies and National Institute of Biology on Saturday, May 17, 2025, a traditional inventory will be held starting at 6 p.m. The starting point of the event will be at Promotion and Congress Centre ‘’Pr Nanetovh’’, (Škocjan caves Park, Matavun no. 8, 6215 Divača). We will start with a presentation of last year's results and field work. Then we will divide into groups and go out into the field. Each group will be given some coordinates, and then they will set out to list the presence of European tree frog in the area of the Škocjan caves Park, Brkini, Karst and Slovene Istria. The event will end around midnight.
Participation in the event is free, but registration is required, as the number of places is limited. We accept applications via the online form. Applications are collected until May 6, or until vacancies are filled.
The event will be organized as a part of ENGREEN 2 project, which is co-financed by the European Union in the framework of the Interreg VI-A Italy-Slovenia 2021-2027 programme.
