On Friday 29 November 2024, the first technical workshop of the T4RAIL IT-SI project, which focuses on the digitisation and support of operational communication in rail transport in the border area between Italy and Slovenia, took place at the headquarters of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) in Rome. The event was organised by RFI as the project’s lead partner and was attended by representatives of project partners.
The agenda opened with the introductions of the participants and an overview of previous pilot projects. Participants had the opportunity to learn about the technical aspects for the implementation of the project, including the prerequisites for the use of the communication equipment, the language package and the software development to date.
The project aims at carrying out the operational test of the Translate4rail tool to overcome language barriers in rail transport operations in the cross-border area between Italy and Slovenia. In this respect, the use of an automatic translator tool facilitates communication between the driver and the traffic controller through the exchange of messages in their own mother tongue. The workshop focused on a live practical demonstration of how the translator tool works. In this context, the participants had the opportunity to try firsthand the software prototype simulating an operational communication through the use of the tablet. Afterwords, clarifications were provided and views on the development of the project were exchanged.
The T4RAIL IT-SI project, launched in April 2024 and co-funded by the European Union under the Interreg VI-A Italia-Slovenia Programme, aims to digitise rail transport communication in the border area between Italy and Slovenia. Its main objectives include promoting technological innovation and improving cross-border rail connections, which will have a positive impact on the competitiveness of local businesses and reduce the negative environmental impacts of transport.
The project involves 8 project partners and 6 associate partners working together to develop solutions for more efficient cross-border rail transport.
