CIVIFORM's new sustainable didactic vegetable garden, the result of the ‘MEDS GARDEN+’ project, was inaugurated in Cividale del Friuli on 10 October.
The didactic garden aims to spread the knowledge of Mediterranean aromatic herbs and to integrate zero-kilometre urban agriculture in the training courses related to tourism, catering and agrifood offered by CIVIFORM.
The vegetable garden, one of the project's five pilot actions, is also proposed as a key location for the development of green and life skills, training future workers in the valorisation of gastronomic cultural heritage and developing an all-round awareness of sustainability issues.
The garden project adopts innovative technologies such as vertical aeroponic cultivation and combines them with organic cultivation, allowing significant water savings and avoiding the use of pesticides. Aeolian towers with LED lights allow year-round cultivation indoors, while outdoors the seasonal cycles are followed. Outdoors, modern techniques are applied to improve the soil, guaranteeing a healthy environment rich in biodiversity, thanks also to the construction of a ‘bug hotel’ and a ‘bat box’ to encourage the local ecosystem.
