As part of the KARST-SAFE Preventive Measures for a Safe Karst project, co-financed by the European Union under the Interreg VI-A Italy Slovenia programme, the Municipalities of Sežana and Komen prepared a workshop with local stakeholders on 4 June 2024 with the aim of obtaining the widest possible range of preventive measures for fire protection in the Karst. We were very satisfied with the participation, as 52 representatives of various organizations from the local environment gathered. Most of them were representatives of local, village and agrarian communities from the municipalities of Komen and Sežana, as well as representatives from the fields of: agriculture, forestry, protection of natural and cultural heritage, and firefighting.
At the beginning, the existing measures and proposals for additional preventive measures were presented by Blaž Turk, director of the Institute for Fire and Rescue Service Sežana, mag. Ida Štoka from the Agricultural Advisory Service Sežana, Matej Kravanja from the Slovenia Forest Service and Dr. Jana Laganis from the Institute for Nature Conservation.
The presentations were followed by a workshop in which the participants presented their proposals for preventive measures according to four thematic sections: fire protection measures from the firefighting point of view, preventive measures in the community, agricultural measures, protection of natural and cultural heritage.
A total of 45 proposals were made, with many initiatives addressing the problem of overgrowth, which was among the most highlighted challenges. The proposals for measures are collected and presented by the lead partner at a cross-sectoral workshop, on 12 June in the auditorium of the Education Centre for Protection and Rescue at Ig.
After the completion of the workshops at the local and national level in Slovenia and Italy, the project partners will include the most appropriate proposals in the preparation of the Cross-border Action Plan for the Implementation of Fire Protection Prevention Measures. The Action Plan will form the basis for the preparation of a call for proposals for the implementation of these measures worth EUR 195,000.
