POSEIDONE meets the students and researchers of the ‘School and Workshop on Polar Climates’

Also this Summer, physicists and climatologists from the ICTP devoted an entire afternoon to discovering the rich marine biodiversity protected by WWF MPA Miramare through a study visit led by WWF Staff to the mussel beds of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Miramare and the Trieste coastline.

Thanks to the INTERREG ITA SLO VI-A Project ‘POSEIDONE’, students, teachers and researchers boarded ‘Flabellina’, the eco-friendly and silent electric boat of the MPA fleet, for a real experience at the mussel farms along the Trieste coastline from Grignano to Santa Croce, to closely observe and understand the importance of the ecosystem services rendered by mussel farms to the natural environment as true biodiversity hotspots created by man, feeding and nesting sites for migratory marine-coastal species, and home to numerous protected bird species of Community Interest.

In addition to the boat experience, the MPA staff accompanied the participants on a visit to the Biodiversitario Marino, the immersive museum of the Miramare MPA, and then on a spectacular seawatching tour inside the protected area, in which the lucky scholars immersed themselves in the prolific waters of the MPA's integral protection zone to discover the wealth of marine organisms that the WWF's expert marine biologists monitor during the visual census activities conducted as part of the POSEIDONE project.

All participants then received a voucher to visit BioMa independently, with the help of the staff present at the visitor centre and multilingual audio guides. All participants were given brochures on the POSEIDONE project, the Miramare MPA and the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
