On Tuesday, 26 November 2024, an expert excursion was organized to visit best practices in organic and biodynamic farming in Italy. This excursion was organised within the POSEIDONE strategic project, under the Interreg VI-A Italy-Slovenia Programme. It was attended by representatives from the Solinar Association of Strunjan, as well as farmers, growers, and local experts interested in expanding their knowledge and adopting sustainable agricultural practices.
The primary objective of the excursion was to share successful examples of organic and biodynamic farming practices and to promote sustainable approaches in agriculture. The group first visited the Antonič educational farm in Cerovlje, where participants learned about traditional farming methods from the Karst region. The Antonič farm specializes in breeding the indigenous Istrian pramenka, also known as the Karst sheep, which is of particular importance due to its endangered status. The farm has been producing sheep’s cheese for many years, and the growing demand coupled with limited supply highlights the importance of developing and promoting such activities. The visit also included a tour of other animals on the farm, with a memorable moment when the shepherd led the sheep to pasture.
The next stop was at the Feresin integrated farm, renowned for its orchards and greenhouses. During the visit, we gained insights into the principle of biotic protection used in the production of autumn vegetables, with a special focus on the Treviso radicchio, one of the most prized varieties of radicchio in Italy. The farm implements integrated production methods that prioritize the balance between natural processes and agricultural production. This approach ensures the protection of the environment while maintaining high agricultural standards. The tour highlighted the farm's innovative practices in managing pests and enhancing plant health, fostering a sustainable and efficient agricultural system.
The final part of the excursion took place at the Visintini biodynamic farm, where we focused on biodynamic wine production. The farm is renowned for its use of biodynamic preparations such as 500 and 501, which are employed for plant protection and soil conservation. The Visintini winemaker provided us with valuable insights into the importance of closely observing soil conditions, conducting regular analyses, and applying biodynamic preparations in a way that enhances the coordination between natural cycles and agricultural practices. We also visited the winery, where we learned about the distinct advantages of biodynamic methods over conventional practices, particularly in terms of fostering soil health, improving grape quality, and creating more sustainable production systems.
The excursion provided a valuable platform for disseminating knowledge and promoting organic and biodynamic farming practices among farmers and producers. At the conclusion of the excursion, participants had the opportunity to exchange experiences, further contributing to the spread of sustainable agricultural practices aligned with the principles of environmental preservation, biodiversity, and the enhancement of agricultural produce quality.
The purpose and objectives of the excursion were successfully achieved, as we acquired valuable insights that will play a key role in advancing sustainable methods and practices in Slovenian agriculture. This event serves as another exemplary case of fostering collaboration between farmers, experts, and the local community, all working together to develop sustainable practices that not only support nature conservation but also ensure the continued production of high-quality crops for future generations.
