The National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics - OGS within the framework of the Interreg V-A Italy-Slovenia Programme 2014-2020 coordinated the TRETAMARA project, which had as partners the NIB (the Marine Biology Station of Piran), the CNR (ISMAR of Venice and IGG of Padua) and Shoreline and was aimed at enhancing the biogenic and geogenic heritage of the Northern Adriatic. In the analysis of the current management of protected areas, carried out in TRETAMARA, a number of shortcomings were highlighted that can be summarised in an absence of coordination and strategies; this translates into poor management efficiency, which can be improved through the adoption of shared objectives, strategies and management tools at the Upper Adriatic level. The challenge of the TRECap project is to initiate this process through the sharing of some actions to serve as an example. Attention has been focused on a threat, climate change, which strongly undermines our marine environments, and on a species, Pinna nobilis, at risk of extinction but still present in the Northern Adriatic, in order to start building shared management strategies. All actions are accompanied by other communication and training activities that will promote this cross-border vision and enable its transferability and durability. The objective is to improve the management of all protected sites in the Northern Adriatic by providing replicable examples of good practice such as the climate change monitoring network and a cross-border strategy for the management of P. nobilis in the Northern Adriatic. The main innovative aspect is determined by the joint approach that will be able to deliver results on a North Adriatic scale. The project results will be good practices to fight climate change and safeguard Pinna nobilis, to be replicated in the protected areas, information and training modules for generic targets but also to start up Blue economy chains (slow and blue tourism).
