On Thursday, January 16, 2025, as part of the E-NAT2CARE project, Škocjan Caves Park, in collaboration with the National Institute of Biology, organized an event dedicated to the Ural Owl (Strix uralensis) and the Alpine Longhorn Beetle (Rosalia alpina). These two key species serve as bioindicators of habitat preservation and biodiversity in the Škocjan Caves Biosphere Reserve.
The lecturers, Stiven Kocijančič and Andrej Kapla from the National Institute of Biology, emphasized the importance of preserving old forest stands, monitoring these two species, and implementing measures to improve their habitats.
During the field tour, participants observed specific conservation efforts carried out by the Škocjan Caves Park:
- Rosalium, a pyramid of fresh logs designed for observing and monitoring the Alpine Longhorn Beetle, and
- Nesting boxes installed to monitor the Ural Owl population, Slovenia's largest cavity-nesting bird.
The event was attended by managers, foresters, other collaborators from forestry services, and forest owners.
The event aimed to enhance understanding of biodiversity and its integration into planning and management of protected areas in the cross-border region. Through knowledge exchange and the involvement of local communities and key stakeholders, this event marked an important step toward balancing nature conservation and quality of life.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of this event!
