On 6 March 2025, the first online meeting of the WP2.4.1 working group took place, focusing on the standardisation of terms related to academic titles and professional qualifications between Italy and Slovenia. The meeting, coordinated by Dr Matejka Grgič (SLORI), brought together Slovenian and Italian experts who presented legal frameworks of both countries and key cross-border terminology challenges.
The main speakers were:
🔹 Andrea Bartole (CAN Costiera), who introduced Slovenia’s legal framework for academic and professional titles, with a focus on the 2022 law and the Classius P16 classification system.
🔹 Samanta Kravanja, a lawyer and court interpreter, analysed the use of professional titles in legal documents and their translation into Italian in judicial contexts.
🔹 Jadranka Cergol Gabrovec (University of Primorska) discussed the translation of academic regulations at the University of Primorska and the challenges of adapting Slovenian university titles to Italian legislation.
🔹 lawyer Petra Kukanja (SLORI) addressed regulated professions, focusing on the requirements for practising law and ethical codes.
🔹 Maja Mezgec (SLORI) presented cross-border recognition of qualifications, highlighting the differences between the Italian and Slovenian systems and the challenges in translating titles.
One of the key findings of the meeting was the need for harmonised translations of academic and professional titles to facilitate recognition and understanding between the two countries. Differences in academic and professional systems were discussed, emphasising the importance of a unified technical vocabulary for institutions and cross-border professionals.
The working group has outlined the next steps of the project, including meetings to work on the translation and standardisation of key terms.
