On 23 September, partners of the Kras4us project visited examples of good agricultural practices on two farms in the Karst region. First, we visited the social farm Parco Rurale "Alture di Polazzo" in Foljano - Sredipolje, where the conservation of the Karst grazing land has been approached in a particularly innovative way, with cyclical grazing of donkeys and cows on the 86 hectares of Karst. In the winter they also remove overgrowth from the dry grasslands by hand, thus preventing rapid overgrowth and preserving high biodiversity of the area.
From there, we drove to the didactic Antonič Farm in Cerovlje. They are the last farm in the Italian Karst which is struggling rapidly overgrowing Karst landscape with a flock of 200 Istrian Milk Sheep, a breed of domestic sheep native to the Karst, guarded by a shepherd. In this way, they also ensure fire safety. Traditional farming, which contributes to preserving the rich biodiversity of the Karst, is also used for tourism purposes, offering visitors a special experience of spending a day with a shepherd.
