On Friday, 11 September 2026, Kobarid and Livek were at the centre of a day dedicated to cycling and sustainable mobility. As part of a joint event organised within the ADRIONCYCLETOUR and CycleProMotion projects, two important new facilities were officially opened – the Staro Selo–Kobarid cycling connection and the first Smart Cycling Station in Livek.
The event, organised by the Municipality of Kobarid and GOLEA, brought together project partners, local stakeholders, representatives of institutions and cycling enthusiasts. The event was also attended by Marko Matajurc, Mayor of the Municipality of Kobarid, Matej Pahor, Director of GOLEA, and Matija Ukmar, Director of RRA Severne Primorske.
RRA Severne Primorske is the Lead Partner of the CycleProMotion project, while the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia is the Lead Partner of the ADRIONCYCLETOUR project. The joint event therefore brought together, both symbolically and in practice, two projects that contribute to the development of cycling infrastructure, sustainable mobility and cross-border cooperation.
New Staro Selo–Kobarid cycling connection
Within the ADRIONCYCLETOUR project, the new cycling connection between Staro Selo and Kobarid was presented. The new section is 4,850 metres long and forms part of the national D7 cycling route.
The new connection represents an important addition to the existing cycling infrastructure in the Kobarid area and provides safer and more enjoyable connections between local settlements and the wider cycling network.
The event took place in a true cycling spirit. Participants cycled together along the new cycling connection before continuing towards Livek.
A special contribution to the event was made by Andrej Hauptman, former Slovenian professional cyclist and Sports Director of UAE Team Emirates XRG, who, as the event ambassador, supported efforts to promote cycling and sustainable mobility through his participation.
First Smart Cycling Station opened in Livek
The cycling route continued towards Livek, where the official opening of the Smart Cycling Station, established within the CycleProMotion project, took place.
At the opening, participants were also addressed by Massimiliano Tremul, representative of the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lead Partner of the ADRIONCYCLETOUR project, and Michele Becia, representative of the Joint Secretariat of the Interreg VI-A Italy–Slovenia Programme. Their presence further highlighted the importance of synergies between the projects, cross-border cooperation and the joint development of sustainable mobility across the programme area.
The station in Livek is the first of five Smart Cycling Stations that will connect the Slovenian and Italian parts of the programme area within the CycleProMotion project. In this way, a cross-border network of supporting infrastructure for cyclists and sustainable tourism is being developed.
The Smart Cycling Station in Livek enables e-bike charging, with electricity generated by photovoltaic panels installed on its roof. It is also equipped with a rest area, tables, benches and other facilities for cyclists. The station will be further upgraded with digital content, providing visitors with access to local, tourist and other useful information.
Two projects, one common goal – a more connected and sustainable region
The joint event demonstrated how activities implemented within different European projects can complement and reinforce each other. While ADRIONCYCLETOUR contributes to the development and connection of cycling infrastructure, CycleProMotion complements cycling routes with modern supporting infrastructure and services for users.
Both new facilities represent an important step towards creating an even more cyclist-friendly area, while at the same time promoting sustainable mobility, cross-border cooperation and the development of green and active tourism.
Following the official programme, the event in Livek continued with an informal gathering of the participants.
