First Aid for Tourist Guides - knowledge that saves lives

ORA Krasa in Brkinov in cooperation with the Društvo turističnih vodnikov Krasa in Brkinov (Association of Tourist Guides of Karst and Brkini), successfully organised a two-day workshop - first aid course - within the framework of the strategic project KRAS-CARSO II, co-financed by the European Union under the Interreg VI-A Italy-Slovenia Programme 2021-2027. The content of the two-day workshop was specifically tailored to the needs of local tourist guides of the Karst and Brkini region who guide visitors through the Kras-Carso Geopark.

The first day of the workshop was mainly dedicated to the theoretical basics of first aid. Mrs Tina Furlan, an associate of the Red Cross Sežana (Rdeči križ Sežana), presented the key first aid measures, the importance of quick action and the management of various types of injuries and sudden illnesses in an understandable and professional way. This was followed by a demonstration of basic resuscitation procedures on manikins, where the guides were able to test their knowledge and acquire practical skills.

The second day was more practical, focusing on simulations of real situations in the field. Under the guidance of Mr Sam Milanič, an experienced caving guide and first aid instructor, participants actively practiced the care of various injuries, from minor abrasions to more complex conditions such as hip fractures or heat exhaustion. In addition to his expert knowledge, the lecturer also shared many personal experiences from guiding in the challenging karst world, which gave the workshop additional weight and practical value.

In addition to the knowledge gained, the course was also extremely valuable in terms of the exchange of experiences between guides, as participants discussed the concrete challenges they face in the field and the content and necessity of the basic first aid equipment that every guide should carry.

The workshop was extremely well received as it strengthened the guides' confidence in themselves, empowered them to act effectively and calmly in the event of an accident and contributed to improving the safety of visitors to the Karst and Brkini region.
