On Friday, 2 October, a thematic hike entitled “Following in Rojec’s footsteps to Brestovec” took place as part of the cross-border project BEroots – Between Rivers and Lagoons: Artistic Routes. The event offered participants an opportunity to discover the history and heritage of the First World War in the Gorizia Karst.
Led by Mitja Juren, an expert and researcher of First World War history, participants followed the Brestovec Historical Trail, an itinerary immersed in the distinctive Karst landscape and marked by numerous traces and testimonies of the conflict.
Along the route, the group passed the remains of fortifications and trenches before reaching the Cannon Gallery, built between January and August 1917. Today, the site has been restored and developed as a historical and educational trail, providing an opportunity to explore the military structures and historical evidence that remain embedded in the landscape.
The hike continued to Brestovec, where Mitja Juren’s expert account brought to life events, places and testimonies dating back more than a century. The walk thus became an opportunity to interpret the Karst landscape through the memory of the events that shaped the area during the First World War.
The event concluded at Lokanda Devetak 1870, where participants learned about the history and traditions of the historic family-run inn and enjoyed a convivial moment accompanied by a tasting of local specialities.
The hike was organised by the Municipality of Savogna d’Isonzo and SDGZ URES – Slovensko deželno gospodarsko združenje (Slovenian Regional Economic Association), as part of the cross-border project BEroots – Between Rivers and Lagoons: Artistic Routes, co-funded by the European Union under the Interreg VI-A Italy-Slovenia Programme.
By bringing together culture, history, landscape and local traditions, the BEroots project contributes to highlighting the shared heritage of the cross-border area and creating new opportunities for knowledge, dialogue and exchange between Italian and Slovenian communities.
