Within the framework of the strategic project KRAS-CARSO II, an interesting and educational geological workshop was held at the Komen primary school, which introduced the pupils to the world of the Karst landscape in a picturesque way. The three-part event gave pupils an insight into the formation of the Karst, the identification of fossils and an understanding of different karst phenomena.
In the first part of the workshop, pupils listened to a lecture on the geological history of the Karst, learned how the area was formed in a shallow sea and which factors influence the formation of the karst landscape. The lecture was age-appropriate and spiced up with interesting real-world examples, which further stimulated their attention.
The fieldwork took place on the school steps and in the school surroundings, where the pupils were excited to discover fossils, observe rocks and test acid reactions - like real geologists. With the help of a geologist, they also explored a cave inventory and learned how geological knowledge is put into practice.
In the final part, they learnt about the profession of geologist and classified different types of rocks according to their colour, structure and texture. The students finished the workshop impressed, with a lot of new knowledge and even more curiosity.
