This year, on October 6, we will celebrate for the fourth consecutive time the International Geodiversity Day, proclaimed by the General Conference of UNESCO. The celebration of this day aims to raise awareness of geological, geomorphological, hydrological, and pedological diversity, to promote its conservation, and to encourage the responsible use of natural resources.
The observance of this day is supported by the Slovenian National Commission for UNESCO through the IGGP (International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme), with activities coordinated by the Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation (Zavod RS za varstvo narave). The main Slovenian event will take place on October 10 at the Škocjan Caves (Škocjanske jame).
In addition to the main event, a Geology Workshop will be held in the Divaška Cave (Divaška jama), within the geoparka Kras-Carso, as part of the Geology Day for students of the Srečko Kosovel Secondary School Centre Sežana (ŠC Srečka Kosovela Sežana) (SLO) and pupils of the Opčine Multigrade School (večstopenjska šola Opčine) (ITA).
The Karst gmajna Festival (Festival kraška gmajna) also joins in the celebration with a number of events.
