As many as ten new green infrastructures will be realized thanks to the POSEIDONE project in the Northern Adriatic Sea area with the main objective of promoting local development on the basis of common needs and challenges and through interventions in three different sectors: nature and biodiversity protection, the development of green and blue infrastructure in Natura 2000 sites and in the agricultural sector, and the reduction of tourist pressure on parks and natural areas.
These include renaturation measures, the creation of new habitats, the improvement of infrastructure for ecological tourism and the preservation of historical and cultural elements, all of which are essential for protecting biodiversity and promoting sustainable tourism. But here are, in detail, all ten interventions for which the preliminary phase of collecting the necessary authorizations to proceed has been completed.
- Observation tower in the Mouth of the Soča River. The Foce dell'Isonzo Regional Nature Reserve is one of the most naturalistically interesting coastal areas in Italy and, due to its high naturalistic content, has been part of the Natura 2000 Network and Ramsar areas since 1997. A new structure will be built here, designed to observe the local fauna without disturbing it. This structure is part of an extensive project to modernize the paths and observation towers scattered along the coastal system, with the aim of improving access to the protected areas while preserving their biodiversity.
- Freshwater environmental restoration in wetlands. In the Foce dell'Isonzo Regional Nature Reserve, approximately 10 hectares of land previously used for agriculture will be renaturalised with the aim of creating freshwater marshes and wet meadows, fed by rainwater from a number of artesian wells. This project not only increases the area of habitats vital for various species, but also acts as an essential ecological connector between different cross-border wetlands.
- Development of the parking area at Karst Edge. In the vicinity of the village of Sočerga in St. Kvirik, in an area of environmental importance and ecological access to Natura 2000 areas popular with hikers, cyclists, climbers, birdwatchers, nature lovers and locals. An environmentally friendly car park will be created here, which can be used temporarily as a meadow, reducing the impact of tourism and protecting local biodiversity. Equipped with all the necessary information for visitors, this intervention is part of a broader strategy of sustainable site management.
- Reconstruction of ‘Kažeta’ in Strunjan. The drystone wall constructions typical of Slovenian Istria are an important element of the cross-border cultural landscape and constitute a valuable cultural heritage. They also provide an important habitat for the existence of many animal and plant species and thus contribute to improving the biodiversity of the agricultural landscape. This type of intervention therefore enhances the area, but also offers new tourism opportunities, integrating environment and culture.
- Habitat conservation Škocjanski zatok. Restoring and conserving habitats and birds in the Škocjanski zatok Nature Reserve was one of the pilot projects in Slovenia for the complete restoration after industrial degradation in the 1980s and today represents one of the key points of sustainable development in Koper and its surroundings. In the face of climate threats, new mud islands will be created, an ideal habitat for nesting birds and the preservation of saline plant species. This intervention strengthens wetland management and serves as a model of good practice both locally and internationally.
- Improvement of the resting and observation areas of the Brussa nature reserve in the municipality of Caorle (VE). This intervention focuses on the securing of the existing structures, with the arrangement of the roofs and access routes. This allows for a better use of an area that serves as a habitat and refuge for over 150 species of birds, while improving the cycling route through the unique ecosystem of pine forests and dunes.
- Construction of an observation tower in Bibione. Built with environmentally friendly materials and located in an extraordinary position overlooking Valle Vecchia and the lagoon contexts of Bibione, this structure will be equipped with observation instruments and information panels, promoting environmental awareness and responsible tourism. The site, of particular naturalistic interest, is the only site in Veneto where Testudo hermanni is present and is also an important wintering and migratory area for bird species.
- Fencing for the protection of avifauna in the Bosco delle Lame. The investment, in the Municipality of Concordia Sagittaria, envisages the creation of a protected area within the wood to observe birds without disturbing them. Both the site's avifauna and the many photographers, nature and outdoor activity enthusiasts who visit it will benefit, contributing to the conservation of one of the main bird repopulation areas in the Veneto region.
- Renovation of a green area in Portogruaro. This project to renovate the green area adjacent to the headquarters of the Conference of Mayors of Eastern Veneto aims to improve local environmental conditions. The new planting and green infrastructure will be instrumental in absorbing CO2 and reducing noise pollution in this heavily trafficked area, offering significant benefits to the local community in terms of quality of life and environmental sustainability.
- Delimitation of the Debeli Rtič marine area with the installation of buoys. In the context of the Landscape park Debeli rtič, established in 2018 to safeguard the marine ecosystem of the Gulf of Trieste, the Municipality of Ancarano has planned the installation of 12 buoys to mark the boundaries of the marine protected area and prevent misuse and unauthorized anchoring, in line with the regulations on protected areas and nature conservation. The intervention aims to establish an effective surveillance of the area, contributing significantly to the conservation of marine biodiversity and reducing the negative impacts of nautical tourism.
These interventions not only improve biodiversity and the usability of natural resources, but also strengthen cross-border cooperation for the sustainable management of ecosystems, underlining the joint commitment of Italy and Slovenia to promoting eco-friendly development and environmental conservation.
