“ANOTHER KIND OF SEA”: this is the title of the workshop dedicated to the teachers of primary and secondary school organised by WWF AMP Miramare in early September.
Two classroom sessions were dedicated to the knowledge of marine ecosystems, non-invasive monitoring techniques and the effects of climate change on habitats and species in the Gulf of Trieste, thanks also to the contribution of researchers from the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS) and the Association “Scienza Under 18 Isontina”.
Three groups of teachers took part in snorkelling activities by WWF staff inside the core area of MPA, to learn about the great biodiversity of species and habitats in our sea and to observe closely some of the species that have shown the greatest sensitivity to sea warming, such as madrepora (the only coral present in the Gulf of Trieste) and some sponges, studied by WWF researchers as part of the Interreg Ita-Slo POSEIDONE Project.
About twenty teachers participated in the workshop ‘MARICULTURE AND SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IN THE MaB’, an event dedicated entirely to the sea, its natural resources and human activities, from mariculture to small-scale fishing, to modern monitoring and scientific research techniques that contribute to assessing the health of the sea and its inhabitants, including climate change, the introduction of alien species, the degradation of marine habitats and environmental conservation and restoration projects.
With WWF staff and the Shoreline researchers, teachers took part of a boat excursion from Grignano to Santa Croce, across the mussel farms, to discuss special projects such as the European conservation of Pinna nobilis, restoration actions for algae and marine plants, bird monitoring and visual census activities along and inside the mussel farms, which represent a great biodiversity hotspot studied for three-year by our researchers and focus of a huge number of dissemination and schools activities within the POSEIDONE Project.
Almost a hundred teachers from various public institutions and training centres of FVG Region took part in the programme. They will now begin the school with new knowledge to pass on to their students, thereby increasing their awareness and sensitivity to issues of great local and global importance.
