GO walking
The “GO walking” project aims to create a new circular itinerary of 260 km, which surrounds Gorizia and Nova Gorica, European capitals of culture 2025. The main goals are encouraging cross-border cooperation to strengthen green tourism; jointly promoting the natural and cultural heritage; using hiking to enhance rural development; improving route management at the local, national and cross-border level; boosting cross-border university cooperation; promoting a healthy lifestyle. Involving a wide range of actors, not only local ones, "GO walking" will promote a series of activities, which include the creation of the route with opening events and a specialist conference, the training of tourist guides and the preparation of tourist sales packages. There will also be the promotion of the activities through the channels established by both project partners and the strategic management of cross-border hiking trails with an action plan for sustainability.
The main objectives of the project were:
The creation of the first cross-border circular cultural route (260 km) between Vipava and Aquileia, as part of the Council of Europe’s Cultural Routes network.
The development of a sustainable tourism product that connects cultural and natural heritage and promotes hiking.
Improving the management of hiking trails through a strategic document, an action plan, and concrete management solutions.
A 240-km scenic cross-border circular hiking trail suitable for various age groups was created. The trail is part of the Council of Europe’s Cultural Routes network and connects the area’s main cultural and natural sites.
Extensive promotional activities for the area and its hiking trails (media, maps, promotional materials, films) were carried out, with the aim of increasing visibility and attracting visitors.
A specialized conference was organized to facilitate the exchange of knowledge, showcase best practices and discuss the management of cultural and hiking trails.
Several launch events were held in various locations to officially present the new trail and increase its public visibility.
A joint strategy and action plan were developed to improve the management of cultural hiking tourism at the local, national and cross-border levels and to ensure the project’s sustainability.
Approximately 30 tour guides were trained to accompany visitors along the San Martino Cross-Border Circular Trail, thereby enhancing the quality of the tourism offering.
