LINGUAE MUNDI
This project aims to preserve and enhance the precious cultural and linguistic heritage of the transnational area between Cormons (IT) and Brda (SLO), where several languages (Italian, Friulian, German and Slovenian) have always coexisted. The aim is also to encourage sustainable tourism and foster social and cultural ties between cross-border communities. To achieve these goals, a Festival will be organized, scheduled for spring 2025, which will last 4 days and include a variety of activities aimed at a multicultural and intergenerational audience. This will include artistic interventions, cultural and social meetings, interactive workshops, educational workshops, walks, cycling and guided tours. The project will also include an international conference, organized with the collaboration of ARLeF and SSO and a multimedia exhibition spread across the border.
The objectives of the project were:
The organisation of an international conference, in collaboration with ARLeF (Agjenzie Regjonâl pe Lenghe Furlane) and SSO (Svet Slovenskih Organizacij), involving the international sector organisations NPLD (Network to Promote Linguistic Diversity) and FUEN (Federal Union of European Nationalities), and making it accessible through interactive live streaming, in multiple languages, throughout the programme area and beyond;
The organisation of a four-day Festival featuring artistic performances, cultural and social events, interactive workshops, educational activities, walks, cycling tours and guided visits;
The organisation of a distributed multimedia exhibition across the border, with two main venues at the Civic Museum of the Territory of Cormons and Villa Vipolže, where visitors could immerse themselves in the culture and history of local minority languages;
A communication and dissemination campaign to promote the project initiatives and raise awareness of the value of multilingualism.
The expected results were an increased awareness of the characteristics and importance of minority languages, especially among younger generations, stronger cross-border cooperation, and an increase in cultural and sustainable tourism in the area.
The project led to the implementation of a distributed interactive multimedia exhibition dedicated to minority languages, designed to highlight the themes of the festival and the international conference and to bring the public closer to the history, languages and cultures of the cross-border area. Through installations, objects, photographs and multimedia content, the exhibition highlighted the richness of multilingual coexistence in the area, actively involving students and young professionals. The initiative also laid the foundations for the reuse of the materials and results of the artistic workshops in future exhibitions, contributing to the cultural and tourist attractiveness of the area. The exhibition was set up at two venues: the Civic Museum of the Municipality of Cormons, with “Voices: Lingue di Confine e I versi di Celso Macor nelle opere di Dario Delpin”, and Dobrovo Castle, with “Ai crocevia del mondo. Il Collio e la vita al confine”.
The festival, structured over four days and held in different locations between Cormons and Brda, celebrated the linguistic and cultural diversity of the region, promoting the protection of minority languages, intercultural dialogue and the participation of younger generations. Creative workshops, theatrical performances, concerts, sports activities, film evenings and workshops involved diverse audiences, enhancing the local heritage and promoting a responsible, inclusive and sustainable approach to experiencing the area.
To complete the activities, on 17 October the international conference dedicated to the protection and enhancement of minority languages and to good practices in the sector was held. Under the scientific direction of ARLeF and SSO, the meeting brought together experts, professionals and institutional representatives from Italy, Slovenia, Germany and Spain. The conference, held between Cormons and Brda, provided simultaneous interpretation into Italian, Slovenian and English, as well as interpretation into International Sign Language; it was also streamed online, expanding participation beyond the audience present at the event.
