Project summary

Policy objectivePO 2 - A greener, low-carbon transitioning towards a net zero carbon economy and resilient Europe by promoting clean and fair energy transition, green and blue investment, the circular economy, climate change mitigation and adaptation and risk prevention and management

Specific objectiveSO 4 - Promoting climate change adaptation and disaster risk prevention, resilience, taking into account eco-system based approaches

TypologyStandard project

Project ECOMAPS addresses the environmental challenges of the Italy-Slovenia area, focusing on climate change and air pollution, two interconnected and critical phenomena especially in urban areas, known to be climate hotspots. This complex issue can be approached from two different perspectives: on one hand, some pollutants can influence climate change, acting as climate forcers and promoting air warming; on the other hand, a change in climatic parameters can alter the chemistry of the atmosphere and the reactions regulating the pollutant production. ECOMAPS will address both challenges; the project aims to promote adaptation to climate change in the cities of Venice and Ljubljana, providing useful tools to citizens and local authorities.

Objectives
  • Provide citizens and local governments with useful tools for climate change adaptation, with a focus on the effects of climate change on air quality and vice versa;
  • Support policies for adaptation to climate change.
  • Raise awareness of environmental/climate issues among citizens.
  • Support cooperation between cross-border organisations.
Output

ECOMAPS will produce a bilingual web application that will allow citizens and local authorities to visualize real-time data on air pollution and black carbon concentration (BC). The project will take care of the installation and maintenance of BC measurement instruments in the metropolitan city of Venice and in Ljubljana, usefull to produce a long dataset of BC measurements. Furthermore, ECOMAPS will produce guidelines identifying future contaminants related to climate change that should be monitored in the future.
