You are kindly invited to the event “Cross-border School for Archaeological Research on Hillforts and Dry-Stone Constructions”, organized within the framework of the KAŠTellieri project: Sustainable Cultural and Tourism Destination – Cross-border Land of Protohistoric Hillforts of the Upper Adriatic.

The project is co-funded by the European Union under the Interreg VI-A Italy–Slovenia Programme.

Dates and location

The school will take place:

  • from 23/04/2026 to 26/04/2026 and
  • from 04/05/2026 to 09/05/2026

at the hillfort site of Elerji, 6281 Škofije.

Programme

The programme will include several thematic modules:

Introductory specialist lectures

  • history of hillforts in the Karst and Istria regions,
  • methodology of archaeological research,
  • principles of archaeological heritage conservation,
  • introduction to dry-stone construction and its traditional techniques.

Fieldwork at the Elerji hillfort

  • archaeological documentation (drawing, photogrammetry, 3D models),
  • basics of archaeological excavation,
  • conservation approaches and preventive protection,
  • site arrangement and interpretation points.

Dry-stone construction workshops

  • theory and practice of dry-stone techniques,
  • restoration works on existing structures (dry-stone stairs),
  • rules of conduct in a protected archaeological area.

Cross-border activities

  • field exercises at selected Italian hillforts or other archaeological sites,
  • exchange of good practices between experts from both countries.

Final module and certification

  • presentation of participants’ results (portfolio, field diary, photographic documentation),
  • brief assessment of practical skills,
  • award of participation certificates.

Programme activities will be carried out and adapted according to weather conditions.

The school is intended for students, mentors, and other participants. It will be conducted in Slovenian and Italian. The number of places is limited.
