Cross-border workshop in Monfalcone strengthened cooperation in the field of natural disaster manage

Following the successful implementation of the first cross-border workshop on the Slovenian side, the project partner Municipality of Monfalcone organised the second part of the cross-border workshop on 20 March 2026, as part of the project activities. The event was aimed at exchanging knowledge, presenting good practices and strengthening cross-border cooperation in the field of natural disaster prevention and management.

Participants were introduced to operational and digital tools supporting civil protection, with a particular focus on the use of unmanned aerial vehicles in search and rescue operations for missing persons, as well as in monitoring and managing hydrogeological risks. The joint Project Action Plan was also presented, while experts highlighted climate dynamics and the specific characteristics of karst areas.

An important part of the programme focused on strengthening the resilience of local communities. The concepts of Fire Smart Territory and Fire Smart Community were presented, highlighting the importance of preventive action and the active involvement of citizens in risk reduction. Participants were also introduced to psychological aspects of emergency response, particularly approaches aimed at preventing panic among the population.

The event also included an overview of regional-level strategies, including the activities of GAL Carso and the forestry strategy of the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia. Innovative approaches were presented, such as the use of controlled burning as a preventive measure to reduce wildfire risks in Natura 2000 areas, highlighting the importance of integrated and sustainable management of the shared cross-border area.

The event also included public awareness activities, further promoting the importance of preventive behaviour and preparedness for action in emergency situations.

The first part of the cross-border workshop was organised on the Slovenian side within the framework of the project. More information about the event is available at the following link.
