On Saturday, 23 May, the seminar “Fire Paradox No. 2” took place in Nova Gorica, Slovenia. The event represented the second edition in a series of lectures and discussions dedicated to European approaches and tactical solutions for addressing large-scale wildfires and is expected to become a regular platform for international cooperation and knowledge exchange in the field of wildfire management. The first edition was organised in autumn 2025 as part of the final event of the IN4SAFETY project under the Interreg Italy–Slovenia Programme.
The continuation of this initiative reflects the growing importance of addressing the impacts of climate change. The “fire paradox” refers to the fact that, while wildfires were once more frequent but smaller in scale, today civil protection and firefighting services are increasingly confronted with fewer but significantly larger and more complex fires.
The seminar programme offered valuable insights into wildfire prevention and response strategies. Discussions addressed climate change and its impact on wildfire risk, while the Sardinian team shared practical experiences from their region, where several project partners had previously participated in study visits and training activities. Representatives of the Slovenian Administration for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief presented international experiences and cooperation practices, while the Slovenian Forestry Institute introduced preventive land-management approaches based on biomass analysis.
The seminar concluded with an open discussion and exchange of views among participants. International cooperation will continue through future joint activities, including an upcoming exchange visit to Sardinia, further strengthening knowledge transfer and cooperation in the field of wildfire prevention and response.
