Between 29 January and 5 February 2026, Gaiacell completed the first technical test of the NANT XL bioreactor within the COHERENCE project, using a protocol jointly developed with the project’s Italian partners.
The test used adipose tissue collected several weeks earlier under sterile conditions at a local clinic. After being transported to Gaiacell’s facility, the tissue was processed to isolate the stromal vascular fraction (SVF), which was subsequently cryopreserved pending the results of sterility testing.
The process in the NANT XL bioreactor began on 29 January and was completed on 5 February. A technical issue occurred during the culture medium change, but it was promptly identified and resolved within a few hours. The culture phase then continued without any further significant issues.
At the end of the process, the cells were harvested and sampled for quality-control analyses. The final material underwent testing for sterility, bacterial endotoxins and mycoplasma, as well as cell-marker characterization by flow cytometry.
This first technical trial provided valuable information for the continuation of the activities and demonstrates the value of cross-border cooperation within COHERENCE, which promotes the exchange of expertise, knowledge and operational approaches among the project partners.
