On Sunday, 26 January 2025, a geo-hunt took place between the villages of Šempolaj and Slivno from 9.30 to 12.30, where children and young people, accompanied by their families, got to know the geodiversity of the Karst.
Participants used a map to oriented themselves along the route, where they observed, measured and solved various quizzes on geological topics. The start was at the SKD Vigred headquarters in Šempolaj, in a beautiful building made of Karst stone. On its walls and in the courtyard, geo-explorers had fun searching for fossils previously described by the Geopark's experts. They then explored the forest paths to visit interesting geological sites: limestone pavement in Šempolaj, the Lindner cave and the Slivno breccia quarry, where valuable building materials were once mined. Finally, they returned to Šempolaj through the picturesque hillfort sites in Slivno, where the Curiosi di natura guides corrected the answers and awarded the well-deserved prizes.
All the participants (15 children accompanied by their families, more than thirty people in total) completed the route despite the occasional rain. This morning allowed children and parents to discover the geological riches of this part of the Geopark in an adventurous and fun way. The event was free of charge.
We would like to thank SKD Vigred for their precious hospitality on their premises.
The event was part of the strategic project KRAS-CARSO II, co-financed by the European Union in the framework of the Interreg VI-A Italy-Slovenia 2021-2027 Programme.
Organizers: Geological Service of the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia (Servizio geologico della Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia) and Curiosi di natura soc. coop.
