On Sunday, 19 January 2025, from 14:00 to 16:30, a hike took place in Križ - Santa Croce along the edge of the Karst plateau overlooking the sea to admire the coastal panorama of the Karst-Carso Geopark at sunset.
Barbara Bassi, a guide from the FVG Geopark, presented the geological and environmental features of the area, first in the forest, among the karst rocks and valleys, then on Babica hill, where the limestone rocks, heavily eroded by the rain, are visible, and the wide panorama of the bay. The group then reached the Liburnia tower, built in the mid-19th century to raise the water of the Timava river from the coast to the plateau. Here the guide explained the characteristics of the Timava and the history of its exploration. The return journey was along the picturesque Sage trail, at the top of which the Duino's cliffs, the Miramar promontory and the coastal crags were admired.
Despite the cloudy and sometimes slightly rainy weather, 19 people of different ages took part in the hike, coming from various places in the FVG region.
The event was part of the strategic project KRAS-CARSO II, co-financed by the European Union in the framework of the Interreg VI-A Italy-Slovenia 2021-2027 Programme.
Organised by the Geological Service of the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia (Servizio geologico della Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia), in collaboration with the Curiosi di natura soc. coop.
