Monitoring carried out across the region shows that the watercourses in the eastern part of Friuli Venezia Giulia, along the border between Italy and Slovenia, are of great importance for the European crayfish.
Particularly noteworthy are the Torre and Natisone valleys, where more than 100 individuals were recorded at some sampling sites characterised by a high degree of naturalness.
The species' distribution is a cause for concern: abundant at some sites, yet rare or absent in others where it had previously been recorded.
The Friuli Venezia Giulia Region also reports that several river stretches supporting the highest crayfish densities currently receive no form of legal protection.
As regards the control of non-native species, the population of the main competitor to our native crayfishβthe Red Swamp Crayfish (ππππππππππ’π πππππππ)βhas been successfully reduced. Thanks to the ππππππππ project, more than 3,200 individuals were captured and removed from the Brancolo catchment (Gorizia Province).
