From the black and white of the 1980s to the shared light of GO! 2025, Pierluigi Bumbaca’s images capture Gorizia as it changes and transforms. They depict a time when crossing the border meant leaving Italy to enter Yugoslavia. They recount the tensions, the hopes and the anticipation of Slovenian independence in 1991. They recount the fall of the barriers in Piazza Transalpina, Slovenia’s entry into the European Union and the disappearance of the border with Schengen. And finally, they recount the symbolic embrace between Gorizia and Nova Gorica, united under the title of European Capital of Culture.
