On Wednesday, March 18, 2026, the Department of Biodiversity at UP FAMNIT organized the latest in a series of “Biology Evenings”—popular science lectures that are being held this year largely as part of the Kras4us project. This lecture, titled “Pollinators in Karst Fire Sites” was delivered by Kevin Rečnik, an assistant professor and researcher at UP FAMNIT.
During the lecture, we learned about the current state of fire sites in the Karst and examined how fires affect pollinator diversity. Kevin presented the findings of a study conducted in 2025 as part of the Kras4us project, specifically a survey of pollinator fauna in those parts of the Karst that have been affected by fires over the past six years. We compared the results with those from control sites and sought to understand whether fires are a negative or positive factor in maintaining biodiversity.
In the second part of the lecture, the speaker presented some of the most numerous or interesting taxa that appeared in the research samples, with the aim of giving the general public insight into biodiversity and raising awareness that every species plays an important role in ensuring ecosystem stability.
The lecture was attended by around 25 participants, who once again had the opportunity to listen in Slovenian and Italian with simultaneous translation. A recording of the lecture will soon be available on the organizer’s YouTube channel (Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Information Technologies - @famnit)
