Thanks to the Interreg VI-A Italy–Slovenia POSEIDONE Project, the new trilingual brochure (Italian, Slovenian, English) entitled ‘Mussel Farming Ecosystem’ is now available in digital and paper format!
Produced by the WWF AMP Miramare staff, it is a true, full-colour dive into the rich biodiversity found above and below the mussel farms that extend within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Miramare and Trieste coast. Thanks to the Poseidon Project, intensive bird and marine monitoring activities were carried out between 2023 and 2025. Researchers from the WWF and the Shoreline Cooperative have collected a wealth of observations through scientific transects at extensive farms, which have led to the production of scientific reports demonstrating the importance of this man-made ecosystem as a hotspot of natural variety.
It was not easy to select, together with the experts, just a few of the many species recorded for this brochure: 38 species are described here (18 bird species, 20 marine species) with specific information on their presence, distribution, feeding and reproductive behaviour at the mussel farms. But the highlight is undoubtedly the original illustrations by the talented professional illustrator Elena Perco, who has depicted the species in the extraordinary marine and coastal landscape stretching from Grignano to Duino, embellishing the drawings with naturalistic details useful for recognising them in the wild at different times of the year.
The digital version of the brochure will be available here, as well as on the websites of the WWF Marine Protected Area of Miramare and the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Miramare and Trieste coast: www.ampmiramare.it/progetto-poseidone/ e www.biosferamiramare.it/il-progetto-poseidone/.
