Within the framework of the project POSEIDONE – Promotion of green and blue infrastructure for a new environment, co-funded by the Interreg VI-A Italy–Slovenia Programme, the publication Valuable Plants of Slovenian Istria. Plants Connecting Nature, Tradition and the Future was prepared as part of activity A3.6 – Activities to improve knowledge of the areas and their natural and cultural heritage. The publication is available in Italian and Slovenian languages.
The publication presents lesser-known but highly valuable local plant species of Slovenian Istria and provides practical guidance for their cultivation, use and sustainable management. Slovenian Istria is an area of exceptional natural diversity, where many plant species have adapted over centuries to local climatic and soil conditions and have become an integral part of the region’s identity.
In the context of climate change, these species are gaining renewed importance, as they combine environmental resilience, practical value and rich cultural heritage. The publication therefore encourages their recognition, preservation and integration into modern sustainable practices, both in agriculture and in everyday life.
The publication was issued in December 2025 by the Institute of Agriculture and Forestry Nova Gorica (KGZS), a project partner of POSEIDONE. The content is structured into two main sections:
Perennials and herbs: artichoke, wild asparagus, caper bush, lavender, sage, rosemary, bay laurel, immortelle and myrtle;
Fruit species: persimmon, fig, strawberry tree, jujube, citrus fruits, pomegranate, medlar, rose hip, mulberry, almond, hazelnut, service tree, elderberry and olive.
In addition to plant descriptions, the publication includes practical tips for use and storage, as well as selected recipes intended for the general public and families.
