The proceedings of the Conference on the needs and best practices concerning multilingual public service delivery within the Public Administration (P.A.) in the cross-border area have been published, as part of the CrossTerm – Crossborder standardization of institutional terminology project.
This specific area is characterised by the presence of minority language groups: Slovene and Friulian in Italy, and Italian in Slovenia. The conference was held on 23 October 2024, in Koper/Capodistria, at the Science and Research Centre Koper (ZRS Koper).
The volume comprises contributions from academics and experts in linguistics, language policy, and law. It offers an in-depth, comparative reflection on the use of both minority and official languages within border institutional contexts. Specifically, the following topics are analysed:
The use of the Italian language in the Slovene P.A. in the Slovene coastal municipalities where Slovene-Italian bilingualism is officially recognised.
The use of the Slovene and Friulian languages in the Italian P.A., particularly in the municipalities within the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia that fall under the territorial scope of the Slovene linguistic minority's protection or belong to the Friulian-speaking territory.
Through the analysis of concrete case studies, the volume highlights the strengths, critical issues, and development perspectives for multilingual service provision. It is intended as a practical reference and guidance tool for public administrators, translators, linguists, and professionals engaged in the language management of public services in bilingual or multilingual settings.
