The Association of Municipalities of Slovenia, in collaboration with the Municipality of Ajdovščina, recently organized a tour to showcase successful energy community projects in Ajdovščina, Ljubljana, and Ig. The aim was to inform municipal professionals about the role of local energy communities in electricity self-sufficiency, the challenges of their establishment, and the potential benefits.
In Ajdovščina, the first energy community in Slovenia, located in Budanje was presented, along with solar power plants on public buildings like a health center, a football stadium, a kindergarten, a primary school, and a sports center. They also introduced a future solar project in Vipavski Križ, which will support both the local irrigation system and public institutions.
The municipality also highlighted cross-border projects such as H2READY and CO ADRIA, co-financed by the EU under the Interreg VI-A Italy-Slovenia Program. A survey conducted during the tour will help guide future energy community management.
In Ljubljana, a public-private partnership was showcased, operating 51 solar power plants. In Ig, the Sončni Ig Energy Cooperative, the largest renewable energy community in Slovenia, was presented as a model for energy cooperation.
These initiatives demonstrate the active role of local communities in Slovenia’s green transition, climate adaptation, and the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
