Posoški razvojni center (Soča Valley Development Centre), together with the Ustanova "Fundacija Poti miru v Posočju", took part in organizing part of the teambuilding programme for the cabinet of European Commissioner Marta Kos, held in the surroundings of Nova Gorica (Slovenia) and Gorizia (Italy).
A section of the gathering was dedicated to the Walk of Peace, an international cross-border project that links the heritage of the Isonzo Front with today’s efforts for peace and cooperation. Participants set out on a hike through a historic underground tunnel from the First World War beneath Sveta Gora (Holy Mount) and continued up to the pilgrimage basilica, where they were welcomed by Father Bogdan Knavs. At various stops along the trail, the Commissioner and her team discussed the next steps in the development and enhancement of the Walk of Peace projects.
During the First World War, Sveta Gora was completely destroyed, yet it still bears witness to history, perseverance, and cross-border connections. Between 1915 and 1917, the Austro-Hungarian army excavated numerous caverns and a long underground passage in the hillside, now an important part of this popular cultural-tourist route.
The event once again highlighted the importance of cross-border cooperation and the preservation of common European heritage, both of which are key priorities of the Interreg Italy–Slovenia programme.
