Within the framework of the Interreg VI-A Italy–Slovenia HeatIslands Adapt project (2021–2027), two technical events were held in April 2026 in Nova Gorica and Gorizia, targeting municipal representatives and other key stakeholders.
The first event took place on 1 April 2026 at the Municipality of Nova Gorica and was organised by CZT and GOLEA. The initial session consisted of a working meeting aimed at identifying the areas most exposed to urban heat island (UHI) risks. Participants analysed the current situation and identified key critical areas, providing an important basis for further adaptation planning.
This was followed by a technical session led by GOLEA, where participants deepened their understanding of the impacts of heatwaves on urban environments and explored practical approaches for mitigation. A catalogue of technological solutions for reducing UHI effects was also presented.
The second event, led by APE FVG, took place on 15 April 2026 in Gorizia and was designed as a working meeting focused on the exchange of views. Participants, including senior staff and municipal experts, discussed the phenomenon of urban heat islands in the local climate context and enhanced their knowledge of existing heat monitoring and warning systems.
The meeting also enabled the collection of important data for risk and climate vulnerability analysis, particularly in identifying the most exposed areas, infrastructure, and vulnerable population groups.
Urban heat islands represent one of the key challenges for modern cities, as temperatures in urbanised areas rise faster than in surrounding regions and heatwaves are becoming increasingly frequent and intense.
The HeatIslands Adapt project addresses this challenge by aiming to reduce the risks and impacts associated with urban heat islands, while strengthening cross-border cooperation between Nova Gorica and Gorizia to improve climate resilience and quality of life.
