The twin municipalities of Romans d'Isonzo and Sempeter-Vrtojba are collaborating to boost historical and cultural tourism in the run-up to GO!2025 European Capital of Culture. Romans d'Isonzo is focusing on the enhancement of a Lombard necropolis with the goal of creating a dedicated museum. Sempeter-Vrtojba, located on the border line, focuses on evidence of the "iron curtain" and guard posts of the former Yugoslavia. The project "HISTORY'S GAZE ON THE BORDER" aims to protect and promote cross-border historical heritage by enhancing museum spaces and conducting education and outreach activities.
The project aimed to preserve and enhance the historical heritage of the cross-border area by developing sustainable and accessible tourism initiatives capable of increasing the region’s attractiveness while fostering its economic and social development. This objective was pursued through:
- Improving access to the shared cross-border historical heritage by upgrading museum exhibition spaces with sustainable, environmentally friendly and accessible solutions, as well as by producing informative materials to promote the museums and cultural offer of the border area.
- Strengthening the competitiveness of the cross-border tourism sector by diversifying and enhancing the tourism offer through engagement and training activities for students, teachers, and tourism professionals. The project also promoted dialogue between schools, local communities and museums to design and test educational pathways based on the principles of lifelong learning and inclusive education.
- Raising awareness and improving knowledge of the shared historical heritage across the programme area through promotional events and citizen engagement activities. These initiatives sought to enhance the accessibility of museums, positioning them not only as places for heritage preservation but also as active drivers of economic and social development, innovation and active citizenship.
The project contributed to enhancing the Longobards heritage through a range of concrete actions aimed at improving the cultural offer, increasing access to heritage sites and strengthening cross-border cooperation.
At the Civic Archaeological Museum of Romans, two interactive touchscreen displays were installed, featuring content on the history of the Longobards, the Romans necropolis, the culture and burial practices of the Longobards people and the archaeological excavations carried out in the area. In addition, a dedicated museum website was developed to promote the museum and make information and cultural content more easily accessible.
The project also included the restoration and refurbishment of the Military Watchtower in Vrtojba, complemented by the installation of new urban furniture.
Among the activities carried out was a cross-border workshop held in Romans, which brought together 13 representatives of local associations, including organisations operating in the tourism sector. Special attention was also given to educational activities. Italian and Slovenian students took part in guided tours and workshops at the museum and the Šempeter watchtower, while teachers and professionals attended a dedicated training session organised as part of the Longobards Conference.
