On 27 May 2026, the University of Trieste (UniTs) hosted the ALL-MICRO Open Day for Industry within the framework of the Interreg Italy–Slovenia project ALL-MICRO.
The event welcomed companies, industries, hospitals, and medical centres interested in exploring advanced microscopy technologies and state-of-the-art research infrastructure. Participants were given the opportunity to visit specialised laboratories at the Centro Interdipartimentale di Microscopia Avanzata (CIMA), interact directly with experts, and discover how advanced imaging techniques can support innovation across a wide range of application fields.
Hands-on experience and laboratory visits
The Open Day was designed as a highly interactive experience. Participants could choose between a morning or afternoon session, and were encouraged to bring their own samples for testing on different microscopy platforms. Approximately half of the attendees took advantage of this opportunity, highlighting the strong interest in practical applications.
Due to the high number of participants, each session was divided into two groups:
Group 1 followed a complete tour of the facilities, visiting TEM, optical microscopy laboratories, and participating in SEM imaging sessions of their own samples
Group 2 focused specifically on Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) activities
This flexible structure ensured both comprehensive exposure to instrumentation and targeted, application-driven sessions.
Scientific programme
Both sessions followed a structured programme including:
Welcome and presentation of CIMA facilities by Prof. Baj
Guided visits to:
Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) laboratories (Dr. Roberta Bortul, Dr. Bosi)
Optical microscopy platforms, including super-resolution and multiphoton systems (Dr. Agnes Thalhammer)
Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) facilities with practical demonstrations (Dr. Davide Porrelli)
The combination of presentations, lab tours, and live demonstrations provided participants with a clear overview of the available technologies and their potential industrial applications.
Industry participation
The event attracted representatives from a wide range of companies, including:
BO.MA S.r.l.
RUBBERMAC.it S.r.l.
Wärtsilä Italia S.p.A.
FCF FontanaFredda
Fincantieri
Composite Technical Systems S.p.A.
Dr. Schär
Telit Cinterion Communications S.p.A.
This diverse participation reflects the growing interest in advanced microscopy solutions across different industrial sectors.
