On Saturday, May 31st, the èStoriaBus will take participants to Kolovrat and Ragogna, offering a comprehensive geo-historical overview of the Italian retreat from the Soča (Isonzo) River to the Tagliamento following the Austro-German breakthrough on October 24, 1917.
The bus ascent to Kolovrat provides a bird’s-eye view of the Tolmin and Kobarid basins, as well as the Krn mountain range. This location offers an exceptionally clear observation point of the entire battlefield, including the seemingly impregnable—yet quickly overrun—Italian defensive positions, enabling a practically three-dimensional interpretation of the breakthrough at Kobarid.
In Ragogna, at the Cornino area, participants will visit a museum that highlights a lesser-known but very significant episode of the retreat, often inaccurately portrayed as a disorganized flight: the desperate resistance of the Bologna Brigade.
Furthermore, the crossing of the Tagliamento River is presented within the broader mechanism of the entire retreat, revealing its important historiographical implications.
In short, this excursion program offers many compelling insights into the events surrounding Kobarid.
