The clay pit in Bilje has come to life as a new outdoor classroom
Within the cross-border GRENNAT project, the implementation of the thematic educational trail “Glinokop v Biljah” has been successfully completed, offering visitors an engaging way to discover the richness of wetlands, the importance of biodiversity, and the role of green infrastructure in adapting to climate change.
The new educational trail has been developed in the area of a former clay pit, which represents an important natural asset. Through this intervention, the site has gained a new purpose and has become a space for nature discovery, environmental education, and high-quality leisure activities. The trail connects the river environment of the Vipava River, the former clay pit, and the Bilje hills into a green corridor, encouraging visitors to explore a sensitive wetland ecosystem.
Special attention has also been given to younger visitors. Alongside the implementation of the investment, educational panels for children have been designed and installed, presenting plant and animal species and the importance of environmental protection in an accessible and playful way through illustrations and engaging content.
The development of the trail represents an important contribution to the sustainable development of the area. In addition to preserving the natural value of the former clay pit, it strengthens awareness of the importance of wetlands, increases the visibility of the area, and promotes responsible behaviour towards nature. At the same time, green areas contribute to mitigating the effects of climate change, retaining rainwater, and preserving habitats for numerous plant and animal species.
The “Glinokop v Biljah” educational trail is one of the pilot actions of the GRENNAT project, which brings together Slovenian and Italian partners in a joint effort to improve the management of Natura 2000 sites, strengthen green infrastructure, and protect natural resources in the cross-border area.
