The drill passed without the slightest injury to members of the many units involved, which is of course the most important thing.
However, at the "firefighter rainbow" event at Europe Square, the sun was not very cooperative.
The largest cross-border drill in this area – the GOin4SAFETY earthquake drill – concluded with a meeting of the organizers and project partners and initial evaluations. In the closing speeches, the importance of cooperation between areas along the border line was emphasized by all, especially the mayors of Nova Gorica and Gorizia, Samo Turel and Rodolfo Ziberna. This applies particularly, or even above all, in the field of protection and rescue, since natural phenomena and disasters recognize no borders.
The drill’s conclusion was attended by and addressed by Zvonko Glažar – commander of the Firefighting Association of Slovenia.
But the most important fact is that the drill passed without any injuries among more than 600 members of various services from the protection and rescue systems of both countries (Italy and Slovenia), as well as teams from Croatia and the German city of Chemnitz, currently a European Capital of Culture.
There were many workshops on both sides of the border line, managing various situations (according to the drill scenario: from collapsed buildings to fires, buried vehicles, hazardous material leaks, etc.), but the most demanding was the rescue of injured persons from under the rubble.
The drill was coordinated by Borut Mihelj (Fire Unit Nova Gorica) on the Slovenian side and Salvatore Gambitta (Civil Protection of the Municipality of Gorizia) on the Italian side.
