This year we celebrated for the fourth consecutive time the International Geodiversity Day, proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference to raise awareness of geological, geomorphological, hydrological, and pedological diversity and the importance of its conservation.
The main national event in Slovenia took place on October 10th at the Škocjan Caves, where the leading partner, the Municipality of Sežana, presented the Kras–Carso II project. Numerous accompanying activities were also held in other areas.
At the Divača Cave, a geological workshop was organized for first-year students of the ŠC Srečko Kosovel Gymnasium in Sežana and the Anton Martin Slomšek High School in Trieste. The workshop, financed by the Kras–Carso II project, was organized under the auspices of the Slovenian Geological Society to bring geology closer to young people, spark their curiosity, and help them understand geological processes and the importance of geology as a natural science.
After visiting the cave, students took part in eight workshops led by experts from the Geological Survey of Slovenia, the Department of Geology at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering, University of Ljubljana, the Slovenian Museum of Natural History, and the Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation. Working in small groups, they engaged in research tasks, experiments, and observations, deepening their knowledge of rocks, minerals, human impact on the environment, and the importance of mineral resources in everyday life.
The workshops took place in a relaxed and exploratory atmosphere, offering students the chance to experience geology in an active, hands-on, and enjoyable way. Representatives of both schools expressed their satisfaction with the collaboration and already agreed on further joint activities in the future.
