Aleš addressed the topic of the sustainability of maintaining high levels of biodiversity in the Karst region. He reminded us that the Karst has all the conditions for high biodiversity, but that we humans are compelled to take active measures to preserve it. In addition to experts in the field, such as ecologists, biologists, various managers, and decision-makers, the local population itself can also make an active contribution, particularly to the preservation of open spaces. Here, we are thinking primarily of mowing and grazing, which prevent the natural overgrowth of the landscape.
In this context, in the second part of the lecture, the speaker also addressed the assessment of the sustainability of these measures, particularly at the economic level, and presented some aspects of circular economies that could support this in the longer term.
About 30 attendees from Slovenia and Italy participated in the lecture; the event itself was bilingual with simultaneous interpretation. A recording of the lecture (in both languages) is available on the organizer’s YouTube channel (Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Information Technologies - @famnit).
