Within the framework of the GRENNAT – Green Infrastructure and the Natura 2000 Network for Sustainable Cross-Border Development project, a student workshop was carried out in cooperation with the Department of Landscape Architecture, Biotechnical Faculty, University of Ljubljana. The workshop focused on the theme “Green Infrastructure in Urban and Peri-Urban Areas Adjacent to Protected Areas and Natural Assets”.
The main objective was to develop conceptual and programmatic design proposals for the spatial development of the Soča River area in Solkan. The work addressed the integration of green infrastructure, improved public accessibility, sustainable visitor management, and the balancing of recreational use with nature conservation requirements, while also considering the needs of local residents and vulnerable user groups.
The workshop brought together more than 30 participants, including students, academic mentors, representatives of the City Municipality of Nova Gorica, the Local Community of Solkan, local experts (architects and planners), sports organisations, and users of the Soča River area, as well as representatives of the European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC).
The process combined fieldwork, cross-border site visits, stakeholder discussions, and analytical design work. Students explored the spatial, ecological, and recreational potentials of the area and developed innovative proposals for enhancing connectivity between Nova Gorica, Solkan, and Gorizia. Special emphasis was placed on nature-based solutions, sustainable mobility, and the development of multifunctional public space along the river.
The final outcomes provide important conceptual and strategic guidelines for future planning and represent a valuable professional basis for further project activities within GRENNAT.
