As part of the Circular Rainbow project, in Activity A1.1 we analyzed the trout farming sector in the cross-border area between Italy and Slovenia, with the aim of identifying new sustainable production models aligned with the European Green Deal. The initiative fits within the broader framework of EU policies targeting climate neutrality by 2050 and promotes the twin transition — green and digital — as a driver of innovation in the agri-food sector.
Through a combination of state-of-the-art analysis and direct surveys, valuable data was collected to assess the level of digitalization and the willingness to innovate within the sector. In Italy, 70 companies — representing about 40% of the national trout farming sector — took part in the survey, mainly located in Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia.
In Slovenia (areas of Primorje-Notranjska, Osrednjeslovenska, Gorenjska, Obalno-Kraška, and Goriška), there are 73 fish farms. 13 farms, distributed across these five key regions, participated in the survey still available on line for those who wuold like to participate.
The findings revealed a growing interest in adopting sustainable practices and digital technologies, not only as tools for improving production efficiency, but also as strategic assets for market positioning. The full results of the survey are available in the attached reports (Slovenian and Italian versions) on our web site. Click here for the Italian version, and here for the Slovenian one.
