As part of the project, the third focus group was held on April 9, 2025, at the Manzioli Palace in Izola – this time with fishermen. The session was conducted within WP4, which explores the cultural ecosystem services of key species and marine and coastal ecosystems of the Northern Adriatic from the perspective of key stakeholders.
The focus group revealed a rich and emotionally significant connection between fishermen and the sea. For them, the sea is a source of livelihood, mental and physical well-being, and personal identity. They emphasized that life at sea represents freedom, inner peace, and the continuation of multigenerational family traditions. Fishing is not merely seen as a job but as a calling.
The fishermen expressed a strong desire for greater autonomy – they want to be involved in decision-making regarding the marine environment and strive to reclaim their role as caretakers of the sea. They pointed out excessive bureaucracy, impractical legislation, and an imbalance among stakeholders, where they are often overlooked.

The discussion revealed a sense of systemic injustice – fishers feel their experiences are not sufficiently valued, while other stakeholders receive funding and projects. They proposed more targeted support and the establishment of a coastal office under the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food, which would enable a better understanding of their challenges.
The gathered insights will make a valuable contribution to the project’s ethical matrix, which connects ecological and social values of the marine space.
