The exhibition ‘Between Black and White’ by Slovenian artist Vanja Mervič was inaugurated in Gorizia in the multifunctional space of the Sdag at the former Sant'Andrea border crossing, renovated thanks to the European project Crew – Križišče vizij/Visioni incrociate (Interreg Italy–Slovenia 2021–2027). This is the second exhibition hosted in this venue, after that of Ignazio Romeo, and is part of a programme aimed at promoting the culture and territory of the cross-border area.
The opening was attended by institutional representatives and project managers, who emphasised the role of Sdag in the territory and the continuity of the legacy of the European Capital of Culture. The exhibition will be open until 20 February.
The works of Mervič, a multidisciplinary artist born in Koper in 1973, reflect on contemporary processes of transformation. Among the works on display are:
· a series of dry prints based on historical coins (thalers, lire, dinars) transformed into a symbolic coin of the border area;
· photographs taken with an electron microscope, revealing the invisible through matter;
· the Parallele series, in which acrylic paint, subjected to freezing and melting, generates abstract compositions guided by natural processes.
Overall, the exhibition highlights an art that does not represent, but records and makes visible transformations, with the artist acting as a facilitator of the creative process.
