As part of the AGROTUR+ project, a four-day artistic residency took place on the Karst between 14 and 17 October 2025, bringing together nine artists from Slovenia and Italy.
The artists explored the Karst landscape, the Terrano wine tradition, local architecture and rich cultural heritage. They visited Štanjel, Tomaj, Lipica, Pliskovica, Duino and Aurisina, met local artisans and discovered the authentic flavours of the region.
The inspiration gathered during the residency will be transformed into artworks that will become part of the Digital Teran Museum – a modern and interactive presentation of the Karst’s heritage, wine and cultural landscape. The museum will be located in Štanjel Castle and Dutovlje, offering visitors a unique experience of the Karst and its Terrano wine.
On Friday, 17 October, an informal gathering was held at the Botanical Garden of Sežana, bringing together project partners, local representatives and the media, where the artists presented their first impressions and the initial concepts of their works.
During the residency, two young artists created a mural in the centre of Sežana, leaving a lasting artistic mark on the urban landscape. In the coming weeks, more artworks will take shape – including a tapestry using Teran and the characteristic Karst red soil as pigments, and pieces that incorporate distinctive elements of the Karst into the creative process, such as the use of limestone in intaglio printing or oak galls for pigment preparation.
Through a contemporary artistic interpretation, the tradition of Karst juniper spirit (brinjevec) production – one of the region’s most recognisable symbols – will also be represented.
The AGROTUR+ project continues more than a decade of efforts to promote sustainable tourism and strengthen the link between culture, wine and rural heritage. The artistic residency represents another step towards new forms of cultural promotion that connect people and places across borders.
